Simply had to schedule this for April Fool’s Day because this week’s Genius is such a Joker (complimentary)!
Sebastian Conelli is one of the only men on this Earth I think should be allowed to podcast. Every time I see clips from “Loud About Nothing” on my Instagram feed, I watch it to the end and then hit Like, in full agreement with Seb’s take.
He’s also an improviser and actor, recently seen in Anora (yes, Anora!)
He’s also a deeply kind and thoughtful human being. Read on if you know what’s good for you.
Other Voices, Other Geniuses: Sebastian Conelli
What song are you especially into currently?
I love listening to songs over and over again. Lately it’s been "Denial is a River" by Doechii. She’s incredible! I really love that song!
What is the trait within yourself about which you feel the most ambivalent?
I totally had to look up the word ambivalent (I knew what it meant, but I was scared I didn’t). I guess being fat. It makes life harder, and people can be mean, but I believe I’m a better person and more understanding because of my weight. I think being fat at a young age helped me develop a personality and a desire to make others happy, but it also taught me to hate myself because the world implied I should. Tough…lol.
How do you like to waste time?
Pacing. I pace all day and think. I’m not well.
What book is currently living by your toilet/bed and how are you liking it?
A Court of Mist and Fury. I read the first one and was disappointed, but everyone says this one is hornier. We'll see! I hope it is!
What news topic that will always get you to click?
Wealth distribution and building class solidarity. Get rid of billionaires!
What celebrity do you genuinely think you could get with if you met under the right circumstances?
Saweetie. I think she would love me. I believe in manifestation sooooo Saweetie would love me.
Please put a selfie here:
Have you ever had an out of body experience?
I smoked a lot of salvia. That was too much.
What is your favorite outfit worn by any character in The Devil Wears Prada?
Meryl Streep’s purple dress when you first meet her. She’s incredible. Also, love Anne Hathaway. Princess Diaries is one of my favorite movies of all time!
What do you consider the secret to your success?
Not quitting.
When have you been or felt the most FAMOUS in your life?
I wanted to write something silly but probably at the premiere of Anora. I got to walk the red carpet. I was so nervous, lol. I’m not great at serving looks, so I definitely bought a new outfit and practiced some smiles and expressions in the mirror.
What is your most deeply held but illogical belief?
Showers clean your energy and help you start fresh.
How many tattoos do you have, and where on your body are they? If none, what would you get if you had to?
I don’t have any. I would probably get some corny motivational quote that I could read on my thigh. It wouldn’t be corny to me. I would connect with it way too much, and it would be super cringey. Something about keep trying or don’t stop changing and growing as a person.
What is your most irrational fear or anxiety?
I have so many fears and they all feel really rational in my head. I guess the wildest one would be that a mosquito bite might get infected and spread over my entire body.
What is the coolest object in your apartment/house/domicile?
I have a poster of The Godfather, and instead of the three main characters, my dad, my grandpa, and I are photoshopped in. It’s like we are part of the movie. I’m Italian, and my grandpa was such a good man; he shared that film with me when I was a kid. It felt so special.
Please recommend a product. Any product.
Cast Iron Skillet and cast iron press. I use them almost everyday! I usually cook chicken, salmon, eggs. I sometimes even use it as a deep pan and put it in the oven.
What do you think Taylor Swift is doing AT THIS VERY SECOND?
Working out while someone reads messages to her.
What did your childhood smell like?
Meatballs. I probably ate meatballs three times a week. I’m half Italian and half Swedish, so we had all types of meatballs in my house.
How did you meet your best friend?
Children’s theater. It is so embarrassing, but at least we were both kids.
Who or what gives you the ick?
Acting better than people you don’t know.
Who or what makes you CRINGE? (distinct from the ick)
People who pretend to be happy or act like everything is perfect when everyone can sense the tension.
If you have a pet, put a picture here. If you don’t, a picture of your medicine cabinet. If you have more than one pet, pick the cutest:
What fictional universe would you choose to live in forever?
Whoville. I love Christmas, and it seems to work out for everyone.
What is a trend you hope comes back?
Phone calls. I love talking on the phone!!
How did you meet the person to whom you lost your virginity?
I was being too much at a party.
What is a conspiracy theory you actually think is true?
Krakens. We have no idea what’s at the bottom of the ocean. I guess that’s similar to cryptozoology, but I love that stuff. The lore of creatures that could have existed.
How is a raven like a writing desk?
A raven is like a writing desk because Poe used them as inspiration for his most famous poem. Some people believe he may have died of rabies, which is probably one of the scariest diseases out there. Scary disease for a scary poet.
