Spotify Wrapped has come and gone (and flopped), and the Grammys aren’t for over a month, but what about The Logan Take on the year’s music? I’m glad you asked.
in 2024…
I came around on:
Addison Rae. She’s fun! She’s like if we just had one Spice Girl. Maybe I’ll get on board with Tate McRae eventually but for now, you go girl Addison.
I ultimately gave up on:
The National. Too sad.
We finally got a good fictionalized Fleetwood Mac with:
Stereophonic.
Daisy Jones and The Six found dead in a ditch!
Thank the algorithm for:
Spritely. Otherwise known as the girl who moved to Texas with her boyfriend only for him to dump her by giving her a letter, which became a viral video. Her other music is good, too.
Nepo baby of the year:
Gracie Abrams. It helps her dad (JJ) has been taking a seat recently.
Honorable mention to Romy Mars (she of “tried to charter a helicopter to visit my friend” fame) for releasing two songs and getting no attention for them. She’s good on English Teacher but this is a music round-up.
Stevie Nicks wrote a song about abortion:
I can’t think about it too long or I’ll scream.
You know what, I’ll take it:
Deadpool & Wolverine had the wisdom not only to use Madonna’s “Like A Prayer” in the trailer and during a climactic battle sequence, but also to release the version they used in the movie.
Is it better than the original? No, but anything that puts one of the greatest pop songs of all time back on the charts is fine by me :)
I hate myself for loving:
“I Had Some Help” by Post Malone and Morgan Wallen. Sorry, it slaps.
Soundtrack that went especially hard:
Twisters
Beef winner:
Kendrick Lamar. If you are a Drake stan literally unsubscribe right now. If you’re not caught up on this, I can’t think of a better explanation than the one Chet Hanks texted to Tom.
Album of the year:
Short n Sweet by Sabrina Carpenter. Followed closely by The Tortured Poets Department.
I’m gonna be real here: I thought brat was…fine? As was Cowboy Carter? It’s very interesting as an album/project but is anyone just like, listening to it for kicks? Some great songs but a lot of stuff that seems like it’s there for the sake of being there.
The new Katy Perry we…can’t even talk about.
(Obviously I’m rooting for Chappell Roan for AOTY at the Grammys, but The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess came out in late 2023, so I’m not counting it for this.)
And here’s some stuff from years past that, for whatever reason, I got really into this year and will always feel 2024ish to me…
ABBA song I had on repeat because it’s never a bad time to discover new favorite ABBA songs:
“One Man, One Woman”
Got me dancin:
“Hey Porsche” by Nelly.
Made me think I was in lucid dream:
“Roman Holiday” by Nicki Minaj. I have a lot of dreams about driving, usually about my car flying off the highway, and if this song comes on while I’m driving in real life, I get scared that I might actually start driving erratically.
Chicks song that made me cry a bit:
“Easy Silence,” I’m so fuckin single, man.
I don’t even remember how or why I came across this song but it’s good:
“Wasted Feelings” by Foxy Shazam
Keep rockin,
Lizzie
